Baku Seminar on Price Formation and Transit Tariffs for Oil and Gas

BakuThe conditions under which oil and gas are traded and transported are crucial factors of security of energy supply and demand. The mechanism for price formation for energy and the setting of transit tariffs for oil and gas were the central themes addressed at a seminar jointly organised by the Energy Charter Secretariat, the Ministry of Industry and Energy of Azerbaijan and the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), in Baku on 11 and 12 March 2008. The seminar was attended by over 70 government officials, company managers and experts working in the oil and gas industry.

The high-level two-day seminar was opened by the Deputy Minister of Industry and Energy of Azerbaijan, Gulmammad Djavadov, and the Vice-president of SOCAR, Elshad Nassirov, who emphasised the timeliness of the Energy Charter publications and, in this case, their relevance for producer countries like Azerbaijan. istanbulThe Energy Charter Conference held its 18th Meeting in Istanbul on 7 December 2007, with a particular focus on energy security issues in the Black Sea and Caspian regions (see pictures from this event).

The Energy Charter Conference is the inter-governmental decision-making body for the Energy Charter process. Among the main highlights of this meeting were the approval of a request by the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan for accession to the 1994 Energy Charter Treaty (H.E. Mr Jalil Shams, Minister of Economy of Afghanistan, is pictured being congratulated by the Chairman of the Conference Ambassador Kawamura following the Conference decision), the signature by the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan of the 1991 Energy Charter Declaration, and a high-level discussion on energy cooperation in the Black Sea and Caspian Regions.
shamsThe Energy Charter Conference has invited the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to become a member of the Energy Charter, opening the way for Afghanistan to accede to the 1994 Energy Charter Treaty.

Six countries from Central and South Asia have held the first meeting of a Task Force on Regional Electricity Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in Kabul on 18 November. The event was organised by the Energy Charter Secretariat and the Government of Afghanistan, with financial assistance from the Government of Norway.
